Description
OxyContin 80 mg is a high-dose, extended-release, Schedule II opioid agonist indicated only for managing severe, chronic pain requiring around-the-clock treatment when other options are inadequate. It is a potent narcotic with a high risk of abuse, addiction, and fatal respiratory depression.Â
Important Safety and Usage Information:
- Target Population:Â This dosage is strictly for opioid-tolerant patients; initiating treatment with 80 mg in non-tolerant patients can cause fatal respiratory depression.
- Administration:Â Tablets must be swallowed whole and taken at 12-hour intervals, not on an as-needed (“prn”) basis.
- Abuse Potential:Â Misuse, such as crushing or chewing, causes rapid release of the entire dose, posing a high risk for overdose and death.
- Risks:Â Serious risks include respiratory depression, profound sedation, hypotension, and coma.
- Interactions:Â Avoid alcohol and central nervous system (CNS) depressants, as they increase the risk of severe side effects.Â
Each tablet contains 72.0 mg of oxycodone as 80 mg of oxycodone hydrochloride.
Excipient with known effect:
Contains lactose monohydrate.
